biography

Mandy Hudson was featured in Contemporary Art Society's ARTfutures 2007 held at Bloomberg SPACE, London.

statement

My paintings are usually small in scale, oil on canvas. The subjects I paint are often details. The intimate scale relates to this.

I paint from photographs I have taken, always carrying a camera with me. The photograph acts as a reference, but sometimes photographic qualities remain in the painting: the images are often cropped, lighting becomes exaggerated or the edges blurred.

Found compositions are very important in my work. I try to bring out what first attracted me to the subject. This can result in a completely recognisable scene or something more abstract. Sometimes it is a combination hovering between what is familiar and what isn’t.

I enjoy a level of quiet surrealism, where the natural and the unnatural are combined in a tiny scenario. Leaves on a pavement are surrounded by balls of Styrofoam; a plastic plant sits in an overgrown garden.

The subject can be as simple as just the certain shape of a leaf or a shadow. The emphasis on its particular character is important. Although I am attracted to the graphic qualities of things I still hope to retain a particular atmosphere and a sense of place.
