Over the last 10 years Faithfull has developed a conceptual practice that at times tests the limits of this planet, and at others, records the poetic minutia of the everyday. Projects include a video-work recording the journey of a domestic chair as it is carried to the edge of space, a drawing project sending back live digital-drawings from a two month journey to Antarctica (an Arts Council International Fellowship with British Antarctic Survey) and an animated film developed from drawings made on a mundane walk out of London along the A13 trunk road (a Channel 4 TV commission with Arts Council England). Recent exhibitions have included solo shows in British Film Institute (London), Galerie Polaris (Paris), Stills (Edinburgh). The major permanent public artwork Liverpool to Liverpool was unveiled in the city of Liverpool, England in April 2010.
Faithfull was born in Oxfordshire, UK, studied at Central St Martins and then Reading University. His practice takes a variety of forms - ranging from video, to digital drawing, installation and writing. Faithfull is also a lecturer at Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London.
“Escape Vehicle No 6 sends the emotions on the giddiest trip. You watch, in horrified fascination, as a generic office chair rises 18 miles (over South East England) dangling from a weather balloon.”
- Helen Brown, The Daily Telegraph
“Most drawings are made in series either at a particular site or on a journey. Completed sketches are sent out via email to various user groups, webcast in art institutions, or simply placed on his website. The confrontation of the traditional model of drawing and a contemporary technology is mutually enhancing: the outdoor sketch is brought up-to-date as Faithfull literally relays images to audiences on a day to day basis”
- Mark Godfrey, Vitamin D (Phaidon)
“This is art of its time, for sure”
- Martin Herbert, Time Out
“Both comic and heartbreaking… many of the ‘Escape Vehicles’ are glorious in their inadequacy”
- Eliza Williams, Freize
“The images are serenely beautiful - when the sea is radiant with sparkling light, for instance, the rim glows salmon pink - but stormy seas and forlorn islands emphasise the dangers and tedium of travel.”
- Sarah Kent, Time Out
