Simon Parish was featured in Contemporary Art Society's ARTfutures 2007 at Bloomberg SPACE, London.

His drawing ‘Presents’ (shown here) was shortlisted for the 2009 Jerwood drawing prize.

statement

Simon parish's work is full of quiet affection for the most overlooked structures and situations. Implicit in the working process is an acceptance of the fact that our perceptions of the world are fluid and changeable and contingent on the distilling influences of culture, memory and experience. They are drawings and paintings that accept that our world view is conditioned by our relationships to other media, yet they are works attempting to find a new space in which ideas about painting and paint application/mark and mark making can flourish.

He collects photographs. These range from his travel photographs, to those found in newspapers, magazines and to those sourced from the internet. For him the information in a photograph can suggest different ways of thinking through and responding to an image.

The Drawings operate in a space that is neither painting nor photography but is something like them both. They allow him a quick and efficient process of mark making and a different attention to thought processes which allow for a more open and exploratory methodology.

The paintings operate in a technically different place much more connected to photography. Here the artist pays closer attention to the feel of objects and surfaces. Through various forms of manipulation like cropping, colouring, enlarging, blurring they take on a new and different feel and have a much more varied relationship to time and development. The drawings generally work or fail immediately the paintings grow and change over a longer period of time. These different methodologies push and pull at each other and quietly influence the ways he thinks about the transformation of imagery.
