This day will explore the history of moving
image from a specialist, alongside a history of the development of practice that has become known as new media art.
Over the past year the Contemporary Art Society has been conducting a nationwide research into collection policies of museums. Continually highlighted is the need to develop a further understanding and practical knowledge of working with moving and new media. In February 2008 we programmed a Moving Image day in London which gave an overview of commissioning organisations such as Film and Video Umbrella, an understanding of archives and distribution companies such as the BFI, an introduction to collections and issues to consider when acquiring film and video work as well studio visits.
We felt it was important to continue the research and understanding of this medium and have therefore decided to programme an event every spring that will focus on artists using digital media within their practice. The event for 2009 will take place in March at The National Museum of Wales, Cardiff. Quite apart from this being within easy reach of many of our members, the Museum is beginning to establish a collection which includes significant moving image works including those by Berni Searle, Dias & Riedweg and a recent purchase of Eija-Liisa-Ahtila's multi screen work, The Wind. This work was commissioned by Artes Mundi and bought with financial support from the Art Fund.
The day will explore the history of moving image from a specialist, alongside a history of the development of practice that has become known as new media art. The event will highlight the impact that collecting such works has on artists, and, using case studies will give a practical look at installations and the conservation of moving image. We will also explore international commissioning and examples of where it is possible to commission with a view to collect.
This event is for subscribers to the Professional Development Programme. For more information on how to join please contact LucyBayley@contemporaryartsociety.org
