For many collectors, prints and editions offer an exciting and affordable way to build a contemporary art collection and are an excellent entry point into the art market.
Most artists produce them at some point in their career and for some – Andy Warhol, Richard Hamilton, Bridget Riley, Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry and Banksy, to name a few well-known figures – they are central to their artistic output.
The range of print techniques, from the traditional, hand-produced to those made using cutting-edge digital technology, make them hugely varied. As well as many galleries selling prints and editions for all budgets, the North East is home to the International Print Biennale, which rewards and promotes excellence in print-making through exhibitions, events and an open-submission prize.
Yet the world of print-making comes with its own language that can make it baffling for the unintiated. In recognition of this, the Contemporary Art Society North East has organised a series of four free talks by experts on difference aspects of print-making, to demystify and celebrate the fine art of collecting prints and editions.
