From Research to Realisation: Asia Triennial Manchester 08 and contemporary commissions at Tatton Park

Join us for UK's first Asian Art Triennial, conceived by Shisha in partnership with Castlefield Gallery, Cornerhouse, Chinese Arts Centre, The International 3, Manchester Art Gallery and Manchester Metropolitan University. ATM08 "echoes Manchester's strong political and social history, reflects new artistic practise, and seek resonances between the city and Asia by exploring the notion of 'protest' - in its wildest sense".

Day 1. will be based in Manchester where we will view newly commissioned work, by artists from China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan, for many of whom it will be their UK debut. The trip will focus on how international research can lead to interesting connections and dialogue between 'the global' and 'the local' and can be a vital programming tool for engaging more diverse audiences. Many of the venues involved in ATM08 have conducted international research in preparation for their exhibitions and residency programmes with international artists.

Day 2. On the Saturday morning we visit Tatton Park for the first Biennial, curated by Dannielle Arnaud and Jordan Kaplan of Parabola commissioning agency. Over 30 artists, performers and writers have been commissioned to make new works in response to Tatton Park's extensive gardens, investigating the legacy of collections, collectors and the designed landscape amid current issues of climate change and globalisation. On a tour of the Biennial led by Danielle Arnaud, members will see new works by artists including Gayle Chong Kwan, Heather and Ivan Morrison and Jacque Nimki.
