UK – Slovenia LINKS - Future working
Research trip to Ljubljana – 24-29 May 2011
A partnership between Contemporary Art Society's National Network and Visiting Arts
The Contemporary Art Society's National Network programme and Visiting Arts are inviting expressions of interest from artists and curators in the UK to join a research trip to Ljubljana, Slovenia.
We are offering 10 places to 5 partnerships proposals. Our aim in supporting these partnerships is to inspire closer working relationships between museums and galleries with collections of contemporary art and independent arts organisations within the arts ecologies of our towns and cities.
All successful applicants will be provided with a return air fare, accommodation in Ljubljana and have modest expenses covered for the 5 day research trip.
Context
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, lies between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, the city has been shaped by its geographical position between Eastern and Western Europe and through the influence of long-established trade routes and cultural migration. Slovenia is one of many states in Eastern Europe developing and renewing their identity through cultural institutions and through active relationships across the region.
In the past, government funded national institutions and cultural programmes were solely responsible for the country’s cultural voice and output but in recent years the rise of independent galleries and an emerging creative industries sector has had a considerable impact. Over the last decade, media arts and experimental practice has thrived alongside the development of international collaborative initiatives.
Proposals
We welcome proposals from those collections based organisation who see opportunities and potential in creating a LINK with an artist-led or independent gallery in their local. Proposals should reflect a strong and enthusiastic commitment from both partners.
The application process is in two stages:
1. Please initially contact Contemporary Art Society to discuss your early stage proposal or for guidance on how to develop a LINK. You can get in touch by emailing: nationalprogrammes@contemporaryartsociety.org or call 020 7831 3221 to speak to either Lucy Bayley or Lucy Byatt.
2. You will then be asked to jointly submit a 500 word proposal that outlines why you have made this particular LINK and how you hope to learn more about each other’s organisations by participating in the research visit. The proposal should identify initial ideas for future collaboration.
It is important that each pairing in the LINK proposal is able to describe what they expect to gain from their partnership and how they might use this research to inform their exhibition programme or collection. We are not looking for proposals that second guess what you might learn from your research but would prefer to hear about the plans, expectations and the intentions behind the LINK between your organisations.
