Moving Image

As more and more artists engage with the moving image as a vital element in their practice, there is a corresponding interest from museums and galleries wishing to commission and collect work in New Media.

The Contemporary Art Society recognises that guidance about commissioning and acquiring, displaying and maintaining this form of work is becoming more urgent. This event is an opportunity to look at these issues more closely as we engage with a range of organisations that specialise in the moving image.

Throughout the day we talk to agencies and visit galleries that promote and commission video and film-based works.

The agenda will focus on the following questions; what are the benefits of buying moving image? And what relevance could it have to a museum collection? Film and Video Umbrella, a curatorial organisation that is at the forefront of producing and collaboratively commissioning film, video and new media by artists, will talk to us about the practical considerations surrounding the commissioning process and the potential outcomes for the work once it has been commissioned.

At Tate we will get advice from specialist curators and conservators about how to exhibit and conserve film and video. On studio visits we will engage directly with the practise of artists who specialise in this medium.  The day will end with a special viewing of Willie Doherty’s new exhibition Retraces at Matt’s Gallery.
