ARTfutures is a Contemporary Art Society project. A unique and un-missable event in the contemporary art calendar, the Contemporary Art Society handpicks work by approximately 100 artists to form an exhibition of work for sale.
This show aims to take a snapshot of current visual arts practice. It embraces the work of more than 100 artists who we feel represent some of the most interesting developments in contemporary art. Whilst undertaking the research we have remarked on some common strands that occur across a number of artists’ work. There is a preponderance of collage, where unrelated fragments are brought together to make a new whole. The use of text and references to historical events or art history are prevalent.
Performativity is strong - some artists make live work that leaves traces, others feature live events directly, whilst yet more refer to it obliquely by reference to a stage, a particular music moment, song lyrics and albums. Sculpture is in the ascendancy - not closed hermetic works, or slick finished objects, but rather ones that offer
potential, that seem as if they are on the way to becoming something else. Painting, in the conventional sense, is by
comparison scarce, whilst drawing is growing in status and is used by artists in increasingly ambitious and complex ways.
This year several distinguished artists have nominated others and have subsequently contributed work for sale. None of this would happen without the immense support of all the artists who have been generous with their time and energy and whose presence makes this project what it is.
